How to Use SLIM Debug Tints in Roblox Studio and Player

Maximize your game performance with the new SLIM debug tints. Learn how to verify streaming states, transcoding status, and levels of detail in.

SLIM debug tints

Optimizing your Roblox game for performance is now easier than ever with the introduction of SLIM debug tints، This new feature allows developers to visualize how models are being rendered, helping you verify that your content is optimized before publishing، By using these tints, you can inspect streaming states, level of detail (LoD), and transcoding status directly within Roblox Studio and the Roblox Player.

What Are SLIM Debug Tints?

SLIM (Streaming Level-of-detail for Instance Models) debug tints are visual overlays that color your models based on their current rendering status، Previously, it was difficult to confirm if SLIM was active, whether a model was transcoded, or if a place was truly ready for publication، With these new visualization modes, you can see exactly how the engine is handling your 3D assets.

These tints help you differentiate between lightweight SLIM representations and standard rendering، By identifying which objects are optimized, you can make informed decisions about your world-building and technical setup.

How to Enable SLIM Debug Tints

The method to enable these tools differs slightly depending on whether you are working in Studio or testing within the Roblox Player.

In Roblox Studio

To access this feature in Studio, you must first opt into the beta channel، Navigate to the File menu, select Beta Features, and ensure the SLIM Debug Tints option is enabled، Once active, you can access the tint modes through the Visualization Modes menu located in the top-right corner of the viewport.

In Roblox Player

You can also use these tools during live gameplay، First, ensure you have edit permissions for the experience to view the menu، Open the Developer Console while playing (press F9 on your keyboard or type /console in the chat)، Within the DebugVisualizations menu, you will find the SlimTintMode options available for selection.

Understanding the Tint Modes

There are three distinct modes available to help you analyze your scene:

  • Data Model State: This mode helps you see if models are rendered with lightweight SLIM representations.
    • No tint: Full instances streamed in on the client (standard rendering).
    • Teal: Full instances streamed in on the client using lightweight SLIM rendering.
    • Yellow: No instances streamed in on the client, utilizing lightweight SLIM rendering.
  • Transcoding Status: Use this to check if models are ready for rendering.
    • Orange: Waiting to retrieve status.
    • Teal: Succeeded (ready for rendering).
    • Sky Blue: Transcoding in progress.
    • Red: Failed (check the Output window for errors like moderation or permission issues).
  • Level of Detail (LoD): Visualize the specific representation used to render each SLIM model.
    • Blue: Lowest detail (uses the fewest triangles).
    • Red: Highest detail (uses the most triangles). Objects that are not using SLIM representations will appear untinted.

Important Considerations and Known Issues

When using these tools, keep in mind that selecting an object in Studio applies a selection highlight that overrides the tint، To see the accurate SLIM debug tint, simply de-select the object، Additionally, if you are collaborating in Team Create, collaborator selection highlights may also interfere with the view، In such cases, you may need to temporarily disable these highlights to get a clear view of your scene’s performance data.

As this feature is currently in beta, the development team is actively collecting feedback، Future updates are expected to include a dedicated Studio plugin to further assist in implementing SLIM across your experiences, providing an even deeper look at how this technology impacts your game’s performance and loading efficiency.
